Careers Programme

The programme for each year group: 

Year 7

  • Introduction to Careers – Taking place during a drop-down day, and in partnership with business volunteers, students will explore the world of work, employability skills and the qualities needed for different careers.
  • Employability Skills – Unit of work in Personal Development (developing students as life-long learners)
  • STEAM – Unit of work in Personal Development (signposting STEAM pathways/subjects; women in STEAM; Enterprise challenges)
  • Finance – Unit of work in Personal Development (includes apprenticeships, how to budget, savings & loans, interest rates and what are different financial products used for).
  • Unifrog – Online careers programme helps students with the whole progression process – from exploring their interests, to recording the great things they’ve done, to find education and training opportunities, to drafting their applications.

Year 8

  • National Careers Week (NCW) – Students are given information around the subjects they study and Labour Market Information (LMI) through a series of engaging and stimulating lessons during tutor time
  • Design an App – Make a Difference Challenge – During this event students are introduced to the world of enterprise and the many skills required to be successful in the workplace. Supported by business ambassadors, students work in teams to create a new app focusing on supporting their community.
  • Guest speaker within the STEAM industry to deliver an assembly based on their career.
  • Managing finances, income and expenditure - Unit of work in Personal Development (This includes tax and NI alongside studying how tax is spent within the public services. This then leads to to a focus on entrepreneurs and communication skills).
  • Unifrog – Online careers programme helps students with the whole progression process – from exploring their interests, to recording the great things they’ve done, to find education and training opportunities, to drafting their applications.

Year 9

  • GCSE Options Workshop led by a Careers Guidance practitioner and supported by representatives from local organisations. This workshop will support students to make impartial and informed decisions regarding their GCSE options and to explore potential careers and required qualifications.
  • Barclays Life skills workshop -Students are given the opportunity to learn more about Employability skills and what makes one employable by participating in the engaging and interactive workshop run by Barclays.
  • National Careers Week - Related activities in Personal Development
  • Unifrog – Online careers programme helps students with the whole progression process – from exploring their interests, to recording the great things they’ve done, to find education and training opportunities, to drafting their applications.
  • University Trip to Reading University for a taster day
  • Careers related to the Green Economy – Unit of work in Personal Development (focused on careers in sustainability).
  • Building your own portfolio – Unit of work in Personal Development (focused on how hobbies and interests outside of school can help prepare for the workplace)

Year 10

  • Business Insight Days – Students gain an understanding of the working environment, including the structure of an organisation and to gain an understanding of business cultures and values by spending the day on site with an employer.
  • National Careers Week - Related activities in Personal Development
  • Unifrog – Online careers programme helps students with the whole progression process – from exploring their interests, to recording the great things they’ve done, to find education and training opportunities, to drafting their applications.
  • The Interview Process – Unit of work delivered in Personal Development (applications; shortlisting; interviews).
  • Local Sixth Forms / Colleges to deliver assemblies on what they offer Post-16.
  • Guest speaker to deliver assembly on Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
  • Guest speaker from the Army to deliver assembly on opportunities with that career path. •
  • Assembly delivered by NCS.

Year 11

  • World of Work Conference – An interactive event whereby students are introduced to the world of work, develop work ready skills, and introducing students to the expectations of employers through business volunteer run workshops.

  • Unifrog – Online careers programme helps students with the whole progression process – from explorting their interests, to recording the great things they’ve done, to find education and training opportunities, to drafting their applications.
  • 1-2-1 Future Focus Careers Guidance
  • Local Sixth Forms / Colleges to deliver assemblies on what they offer Post-16.
  • Applications for Post-16 –Support in applications through Personal Development sessions with support of tutor and Creers Lead
