RE DayOur RE Day in April was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about and experience Hindu religion and culture. The day was spent ‘off timetable’ with lessons and activities taking place across the different classes. In the Science department, students participated in four different fire-related experiments; producing fire writing, making fireworks and rockets and even holding fireballs in their hands. All the activities were linked to the festival of Divali which celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, and where fire plays a key role.
In PE, the students took part in Kabaddi, a game that originated in ancient India and is still a traditional sport played across Asia today. After initial heats, the highest scoring teams from each House went through to compete in a final inter-House tournament, where Curie emerged as overall winners.
In Geography, students learnt all about the Ganges River, which Hindus consider to be sacred. They each created storyboards explaining the beliefs around the birth of the river and why it is a fundamental part of Hindu practices. Meanwhile, the Food Technology kitchens were filled with the most delicious aromas as students cooked and tasted Asian cuisine including curries and dishes eaten at Hindu celebrations.
In Art, it was all about collaboration as each student produced their own decorative tile using sequins in their House colours. Head of Art, Ms Ince produced an enormous Hindu elephant and brought all the tiles together, attaching them onto the elephant to create an elaborate and striking piece of art. The finale of the day was the opportunity for students to join a Colour Flash event, evocative of the Hindu festival of Holi, or the Festival of Colours. As a fund raising event for Sport Relief, students paid £4 to take part. With Asian music playing, everyone gathered on the field and, after a countdown, the colours were released and the air was filled with the most vibrant shades. In the thick of it - and proving once again that we have the best teachers - were a brightly-coloured Miss Calder and Mr Sutton from the Maths department and Vice Principal, Mr Prendiville!
It was a really special end to an incredible day. Thank you to all staff involved for providing Oakbank students with such an enriching education and unique experiences. |
