Battlefields Trip to France and Belgium

Oakbank Divider
From 10th-12th July, 32 Year 8 students went on a three day tour of the Battlefields of World War One. As well as visiting Tyne Cot cemetery and the Thiepval memorial, students also had the opportunity to explore a maze of preserved trenches at the Sanctuary Wood Museum. Whilst at Tyne Cot, students took a quiet moment to wander the largest British war cemetery in the world and place a poppy at a headstone of their choice. Many of these were dedicated to soldiers 'known only unto God.'

During our visit, some students were able to find the names of relatives that they had researched listed on the memorials.

Students particularly enjoyed the second night of the trip, where there was free time for shopping in Ypres, dinner in a restaurant and we then attended the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. After a tough decision, it was decided that William and Bryn would be representing Oakbank and laying our wreath as part of the ceremony.

Overall, the trip was a great opportunity for students to mark the centenary of the First World War and develop their confidence and independence. They also had a lot of fun too!'
