Welcome to Oakbank's Art & Design Department

Oakbank Divider
Head of Department
Mrs K Shaw

Vision/Ethos of the Department

At Oakbank the fundamental ethos in the Art Department is that students should enjoy creating and looking at art.  Through the observation and exploration of the visual, art can open up new ways of seeing; it can develop creativity, explore values and feelings, whilst appreciating cultural diversity, enabling students to gain a greater awareness of the world they live in.

KS3 Programmes of Study

Students study a broad range of disciplines in relation to the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from historical and contemporary contexts. They develop their practical and critical skills, empowering them to learn and apply the formal elements of art, whilst developing their own concepts.

Students are encouraged to develop their technical skills and experience art at first hand in order to inform their own practise and be artists themselves.  The students are given the opportunity to create art in a variety of media and to explore ideas and processes.

By the end of KS3, students will have been given the opportunity to create in a variety of media and explore a wide range of processes.  Students will be encouraged to become independent learners, being able to understand their strengths as well as their weaknesses, allowing them to develop their abilities further, as well as preparing them for GCSE work ethos.

Key Stage 4

EXAM BOARD:    OCR, Art and Design, Fine Art

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
60% Coursework (project under controlled conditions)
40% exam – (10 hours)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
During the two year course the students will learn through practical experience and demonstrate the knowledge and understanding about the sources that have informed their creative intentions, which will result in a GCSE qualification in Art and Design.

A variety of subject-specific skills and techniques will be studied and applied into their work in order to use visual language as a way to communicate personal ideas, meanings and responses.  Students will refine their ideas as work progresses, through the experimentation of media, materials, techniques and processes.

Students will critically reflect their creative journey, developing the work and recording their ideas, observations, independent thoughts and personal intentions as it progresses. Written communication will include analysis about artist, Art movements and Art and Craft, as well as using appropriate specialist vocabulary.

The aims of GCSE Art and Design are to encourage candidates to:

• Actively engage in the process of art and design in order to develop as effective and independent candidates and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
• develop creative skills, through learning to use imagination and intuition when exploring and creating images and artefacts. Become confident in taking risks and learning from their experience/mistakes when exploring and experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques
• develop competence, with increasing independence, in refining and developing ideas and proposals, and personal outcomes or solutions. Learning to actively engage with the experience of working with a broad range of media, materials and techniques including, where appropriate, traditional and new media and technologies
• develop cultural knowledge, understanding and application of art, craft, design, media and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures. Also, develop an understanding of the different roles, functions, audiences and consumers of art, craft and design practice
• develop critical understanding through investigative, analytical, experimental, interpretive, practical, technical and expressive skills
• develop personal attributes including self-confidence, resilience, perseverance, self-discipline and commitment.
These specifications further provide opportunities for candidates to gain:
• a personal interest in why art and design matters and be inspired, moved and changed by studying a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study
• Experience of working within real and relevant frameworks
• Experience of the work practices of individuals, organisations and creative and cultural industries
• Understanding of art, craft and design processes and associated equipment and technologies and safe working practices. GCSE Art and Design conforms to the regulations laid down within the Art and Design subject criteria.

All units are internally marked by centres and externally moderated by OCR. Once marked, all work must be retained by the centre for moderation.

Once submitted for assessment, all candidate work must be retained securely within the centre until candidates’ results are issued and the centre is certain that no Result Enquiries or Appeals processes will be required.
